Chatham, ON – With radon being one of the leading causes of lung cancer today, it's vital to bring attention to this often-overlooked danger. January is National Radon Month, making it a good time to purchase a home radon test kit or hire a professional radon mitigation contractor. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is released from soil. Because it is a radioactive carcinogen gas, it can be dangerous to people if it travels up into their homes. Radon is responsible for 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year, making it the second-leading cause of lung cancer (behind smoking). Luckily, there are ways to lessen the amount of radon in a home, thereby preventing the contraction of lung cancer. Radon mitigation is becoming a common service that a number of contractors can provide.

Advanced Basement Systems is encouraging homeowners to test their homes for radon this New Year. Because radon gas is colorless and odorless, it is not detected unless a specific test for the gas is performed. It’s important that each homeowner tests their home for radon before it’s too late.

Radon in a building is measured by picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends mitigating any building with a radon measurement at or above 4.0 picocuries per liter. When a building’s radon levels are found to be unhealthy, a radon mitigation system is specially designed to effectively reduce the levels to a healthier amount. Radon abatement methods can keep radon from entering a house, including soil suction, which draw the radon from below the basement or crawl space floor and push it outside. Some other radon mitigation techniques include sealing, house/room pressurization, heat recovery ventilation, and natural ventilation.

Advanced Basement Systems Expands into a Larger Office

CHATHAM, ONT – While other companies are downsizing or remaining stagnant, Advanced Basement Systems is excited to announce its move into a new, larger office. After outgrowing the old 4,100-square-foot location, the team will be making the move on December 15 to a 19,500-square-foot office. The new office is located at 23576 Prince Albert Road in Chatham.

In the time leading up to the move crew members have been working on the office space and getting it ready. Employees have spent time painting, dry walling and cleaning, as well as organizing and arranging production trucks. The office is coming along, though, and should be ready on time.

“Everyone at Advanced Basement Systems is very excited for this move, and our growth as a company has made us all very optimistic for the future,” said Martin Bates, owner of Advanced. “We know the best is yet to come!”

The team at Advanced would like customers to know that during the move they will still be taking calls but some services may be delayed by a day while they get settled. Also, the office will be closed from December 24 to January 2.

Local Basement Contractor Earns BBB Integrity Award

A Chatham-based basement waterproofing firm has scooped up the 14th annual Integrity Award from the Better Business Bureau of Western Ontario.

Advanced Basement Systems was established in 2003 by Martin Bates.

Bates grew up in London and worked as a bricklayer but decided to take the opportunity to become an independent dealer for Basement Systems Inc., based in Connecticut.

Bates chose Chatham as a home base because it is central to the area his business serves.

The company has 25 to 30 employees including a certified radon gas technician and a master plumber.

The home renovation and repair sector generates a lot of the consumer complaints received by the Better Business Bureau, but Bates said his business works hard on customer satisfaction.

"We don't leave any customer unhappy. If we make a mistake, we fix it," he said.

The Integrity Award was announced at a breakfast meeting on Wednesday.

Dura Med Mobility Products Inc., and Armour Shield Roofing were finalists for the award.

An independent committee selects the winner based on high ethical standards in areas such as marketing practices, community involvement and treatment of employees.

Along with the award, Advanced Basement Systems received a $2,500 scholarship presented by the Rotary Club of London Foundation, to be given to a student or students of their choice attending a post-secondary institution.

Guest speaker at the awards breakfast was Andy Spriet, a veteran of London's construction industry, and president of Spriet Associates, Engineers and Architects.

The charitable event is the brain child of Advanced Basement System Founder Martin Bates. “We live and do business in a wonderful community, a large community made up of many smaller ones where the spirit of helping each other is something to be very proud of” says Bates.

Debbie and Brian Devereaux live in Windsor and a dirt floor basement is causing horrific amounts of moisture in the basement. Mold is also a serious health issue in the basement. The home will need isolating from the earth, humidity reduction and control and drainage. The unfortunate reality is that the Devereauxs, like many in our communities, have fallen on difficult financial times and would find paying for the repair to their home almost impossible. “I could tell when I met with Debbie and Brian that things were not good and when I gave them the news on how extensive the repair would need to be and the associated cost, they were devastated.” I immediately came back to the office and explained to Martin that the Devereaux’s should become the recipient of our “Pay it Forward” program” explains Gordon Pickel, Production Manager with Advanced Basement Systems.

On November 23^rd& 24^th2011, Advanced Basement Systems will “Pay it Forward” bringing stability back to the Devereaux’s home and hopefully give them the encouragement to carry on through difficult times.

The event happens on Wednesday November 23^rd& 24^th at 9am at 2332 Meighen Road in Windsor, ON.

It's National Radon Awareness Week!

We at Advanced Basement Systems understand the importance of helping homeowners understand radon, and we hope you’ll join us this week in raising awareness to the effects of radon exposure!

In recognition of the estimated 21,000 victims of the fatal effects of radon exposure, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Surgeon General have declared this week as National Radon Awareness Week.

Radon testing can be done at home where test results are then sent and diagnosed at a lab. There are short-term and long-term tests available. We also offer radon testing in Chatham.

Chatham, ON – Advanced Basement Systems was recently honored at a meeting of over 600 guests from all over the United States and Canada at this year’s Team Basement Systems Convention. The annual convention is held each year between Seymour, Connecticut, (where the Basement Systems headquarters is located) and Hartford, Connecticut, and brings together dealerships of the international network for classes, seminars, training, parties and networking.

2nd Annual Paintball Party

Advanced Basement Systems had their 2nd paintball party at Diehard Paintball in Woodslee, ON! Owner Martin Bates treated his employees to a day of tactical action with a day of paintball.

Most employees were able to make the trip for the day and had a great time. Martin was more than pleased to spend the day having fun with his team and stated, “It was a great day of exercise and fun for the employees. It’s neat to see some of them battling side by side out there on the field, though during work, they would never see each other, so it’s a great bonding activity too!”

Windsor, ON - Advanced Basement Systems is participating in the “Pay It Forward” initiative to improve their community by repairing a local resident’s rotted crawl space free of charge.

Debbie and Brian of Windsor, Ontario have a crawl space with rotting wood. To remedy this problem Advanced Basement Systems will remove all rotted wood and clean the walls to prevent the spread of mold. When all the repair work is done the crawl space can be used as extra storage space and will be suitable for foot traffic.

On June 17th, 2011, participants gathered in Blenheim Memorial Park for the fourth annual Blenheim Youth Centre Survivor Challenge Fundraiser. Contestants and supporters alike enjoyed an assortment of entertainment that included a food booth, a dunk tank, a 50/50 raffle, and of course the Survivor Challenge itself.

This two day event put challengers head-to-head in an assortment of Survivor style challenges. The challengers ultimately competed for a $2,500 travel package, but everyone’s main goal was to raise money for the centre. Each contestant was sponsored by an assortment of generous businesses and corporations, one of them being Advanced Basement Systems™ of Ontario.

How to Reduce the Risk of Radon Exposure in Your Home

Radon is an odorless and tasteless radioactive gas that all too often goes untested in homes. Elevated levels of radon pose serious health risks and have become responsible for an estimated 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the United States. To reduce your risk of radon exposure, it's important to understand the causes of high radon levels as well as effective ways to maintain a safe radon level in your home.

What is Radon?

Radon is produced when uranium breaks down in rock, soil, and water. Though rock and water can emit small amounts of radon, soil is the primary source of elevated radon levels in U.S. homes. If the soil around your home has elevated radon levels, the radioactive gas can enter your home through cracks or other openings along the foundation, polluting the air you breathe. Radon can also enter your home through water, particularly through ground water sources or well system.

Testing for Radon

The only way to determine if your home has dangerous levels of radon is to administer a radon test. You can either hire a certified, independent contractor to test your home's radon level, or you can use a Do-It-Yourself radon test kit. Either method is affordable and easily administered.

Studies show that the average level of radon in U.S. homes is 1.3 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). This is wonderful considering the action level indicated by the EPA rests at 4.0 pCi/L. If your home shows a radon level of 4.0 pCi/L or higher, you could be at risk. Keep in mind that if you smoke and your home has an elevated radon level, you are at an even higher risk for contracting lung cancer and other harmful conditions.

How to Reduce Radon in Your Home

There are several steps you can take to reduce the radon level in your home, however, be sure to measure the radon levels first and implement a way to get the current radon out of your home. Otherwise, you might trap the radon and prevent it from exiting your home—quite counterproductive!

• Seal cracks and/or openings along your home's foundation to limit radon from entering. Focus on the lower levels of your home, such as the basement or garage. If your home has a crawlspace foundation, cover the ground with a high-density plastic sheet.

• Prevent radon from entering your home with a heat recovery ventilator (HRV). An HRV improves a home's air quality by increasing ventilation and reducing radon levels. HRVs can ventilate your entire home or just a particular area that is susceptible to radon, such as the basement. Be sure to regularly change your HRV's filter to ensure optimal results.

• Pressurization is an effective radon reduction technique designed to increase the pressure in a home's basement, where radon typically enters from the soil. This increase in pressure prevents radon from entering the home through its lower levels.

• For temporary radon reduction, open windows, doors, and lower-level vents to let in outdoor air and increase natural ventilation.

Testing your home for radon is easy and inexpensive, and can drastically reduce your risk of lung cancer. You can perform a radon test yourself or hire a professional. So don't wait -- take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of radon exposure in your home today!
